One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes is when Elaine is sitting next to one of Kramers Polar Bear Club friends at a gathering at Jerry’s. The guy is telling her that male kangaroos have pouch envy. “Why should she have this huge pouch and I have nothing? I have things to carry, too! Atleast give me a pocket.” I’ve seen it many times and even thinking of it now, it still cracks me up. Of course, some of it is in the delivery but it’s a funny line.
I love the simple genius of a good joke like that and the light heartedness of comedy in general. Having a sense of humor is one of the greatest life hacks out there. I remember my dad used to tell this joke, “what is the difference between a schlemiel and a schlimazel? A schlemiel is the guy who’s always spilling his soup, the schlimazel is the guy he spills it on.” Now, it was silly and fun and was told just to lighten things up and make you laugh. Especially in a tense moment.
Life is too important to be taken seriously. I’m pretty sure that as uptight as I can get, I would have snapped like a twig by now if I hadn’t been blessed with a very funny family, funny friends and rooms filled with recovering people, who can keep you in stitches for hours with their stories.
I recommend actively seeking out any and every opportunity to laugh, it’s definitely the best medicine.
