In my program they warn us about a phenomenon called “contempt prior to investigation “. It’s a common thought trap where you already convince yourself you don’t like something or it won’t work for you, or you don’t believe in that, without really exploring it further.
I bought some low sugar vegan “chocolate” which is essentially almond butter and various herbs, dipped in dark chocolate. One of them had black sesame and Chai and I was like, ew! That does not sound good and I was fixing to throw it out. But, I instead I tried it, with a banana for breakfast. It was actually pretty good! And it reminded me that I like sesame, since I was a teenager working in a Chinese food restaurant. Back then I often ate sesame buns, sesame chicken and pastries sprinkled with sesame. I haven’t thought about that in years. I worked there with my best friend at the time, it was fun. That little treat brought back some really nice memories.
Now, obviously that’s not as significant as someone not going into recovery or not finding a higher power, due to their own thought traps, which can be dangerous. But, I think about the many things I have missed out on by closing my mind to the possibility of something new.
It’s springtime now and what better way to start this new season than to approach life like a beginner again? Just to begin each day with a willingness to try new things?
