Yesterday, I went to Woodstock to get a massage from my uber talented massage therapist. It was fabulous. The minute I arrived in the area, I rolled my window down and breathed in the fresh air and the sublime energy. Before it was known for the groovy rock concert, it was a popular spot for artists retreats and home of Bob Dylan and many artists and musicians.
It was also considered sacred ground by the Native Americans. Overlook Mountain, which overlooks the valley in Woodstock, is believed to have been the dwelling place of Manitou, a Native American God. Often referred to as “Great Spirit”, this is their creator god, akin to the Christian deity. Manitou is seen as “the fundamental life force and the essence of everything”. Not to belabor the point but -kind of a big deal.
It is no small wonder then, that there is a palpable spiritual energy in the town of Woodstock. I am definitely drawn there and going there, even for a few hours feels otherworldly. I love the little Sunflower market which has a hippy vibe. I avoid the small restaurant I once visited, essentially run by Cheech & Chong, the food is inedible but the stoned out employees falling out of the back storage closet are entertaining. I love to wander the streets and “bliss out” in the head shops, crystal trinket stores, candle shops and tie dyed tourist traps, but I also attend AA meetings there so I can continue to do that all soberly.
The great RBG often used this quote “America is not symbolized by the bald eagle, so much as a pendulum. The pendulum always swings back.” I do believe the pendulum will swing in favor of all the worthy ideals the hippies encapsulated and peace, love Rock and Roll will win the day. ☮️💕🎸
